The Israel Tennis Center has high hopes for an Olympic medal in Wheelchair Tennis
 ,04/09/2008

The Executive Director of the Israel Tennis Center, Jenin Strauss: "We support our tennis players and hope that over the years our support will bring Olympic achievements to Israel"

The three Israeli tennis players that are going to the Paralympics Games on September 6 in Beijing are in the midst of preparing diligently to bring to Israel a medal. The team consists of two male players and one female player, which have much experience in international competitions and are highly rated in the world rankings.

ITC has been harboring disabled tennis players for over than 30 years and plans to strengthen their achievements in cooperation with Spivak Ramat Gan and Ilan Tennis Center. In addition they are also working on preparing athletes for competitions and financing their participation in international competitions such as the Paralympics Games in Beijing.

The athletes are:
Shraga Weinberg, a resident of Petah Tikva is a one of the most known tennis player in Israel for the past 10 years. Shraga practices regularly at the gym for Disabled in Ramat Gan and is ranked eighth in the world. Shraga has the best chance to win a medal. Shraga participated in previous Paralympics Games where he lost the quarter-finals to the first ranked player in the world. Shraga participated this year in only three tournaments due to the fact that he works full time as a bookkeeper and that is why he is currently has a relatively low rating level.

Shraga is disabled from birth, suffering from what is called "glass bones" (Weak bones which break easily), who underwent numerous surgeries in his life.

Shraga Weinberg: "I am in good shape and know I am able to do it. I've won this year the two best players in the world. This will be my second time at the Paralympics Games, so for me it's like any another major international tournament just like many I've participated before. The great thing about the Paralympics Games is Olympics Experience from the delegations from all around the world including hostile countries gathered together in the amazing Olympic Village. The facilities are the same as the facilities that will be in the Paralympics Games so we are expecting it to be something big. The doubles competition this year is very important just as the singles because I would like to celebrate a medal with my tennis partner Boaz Kramer who's getting married."

Boaz Kramer ranked 15th in the world, a resident of Tel Aviv, also trains at the Disabled Sports Center in Ramat Gan. Boaz has been playing for about three years and has progressed greatly. Boaz plays with one hand and subsequently has a unique style of serving. Boas successfully completed medical studies and is independent in the business. He finished second at the Israel Open which was held this year the Ramat Gan Tennis Center. Boaz's future wife along with his younger sister are expected to arrive to Beijing to watch the games.

Boaz Kramer: "I'm very excited and looking forward for the Paralympics Games. To be realistic, my chances in singles are much less than my chances in doubles. I've been playing for only three years, I found that I am a talented tennis player at a relatively late age and since then I do everything I can towards the Paralympics Games. We do not make a living from it but we compete as athletes who aspire to win. Winning an Olympic medal before my wedding, which is to be held a week after the Olympic Games, is a dream come true that I cannot ask for more.

Ilanit Fridman ranked ninth in the world, a resident of Herzliya, a member of Neche Zahal Tel-Aviv. Ilanit had to participate in 26 tournaments this year in order to fulfill her dream and to achieve the hard and pressing criterion set by the Olympic Committee. Ilanit has a personal trainer and fitness coach who's determined to achieve good result at the Olympics.

The men's national tennis coach from ITC, Kobi Winer, coached the men's team also at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. This time, Winer is optimistic about the chances of success of the Israeli tennis players: "Due to the basic preparation for professional escort ITC gives, I believe that it can be done. We are alert and are excited towards our departure to Beijing. I believe we can come back with at least one medal. Two medals will be considered a great achievement. "

ITC Executive Director, attorney Jenin Strauss: "We believe in our tennis players. They are training with the best coaches, and have known many successes in international competitions. We are all wishing them the best of luck and much success."
